U16 Mizen Rovers keep the unbeaten streak alive

It was off to Timoleague for Mizen Rovers on Friday July 1st to play local team Argideen Rangers in U 16 hurling league.

We only had  the bare team but the twelve lads put in a sterling team performance for the hour to win the league points, and remain unbeaten thus far.

Sean Flynn was coolness personified between the sticks as the full backs Keith Whitley and Stephen Pyburn covered and cleared tidily. Mizen’s captain, Aaron Barry, led from centre back with his long deliveries and was always available to assist a team mate. On his flanks were Ryan O’Callaghan and Brendan Goggin who both made vital interceptions and always looked to attack when in possession. Daryl Connell in midfield was his usual busy self harrassing opponents and moving ball into the forwards.  Shane O’Leary took time to settle in his new role at centre forward but as the game aged he got through a lot of work, distributing possession and preventing the Timoleague backs from clearing easily. The two Eoghans Dwyer and Sheehan were on the wings and their direct style of keeping the ball moving inside to the danger area proved very productive over the hour. Cathal O’Sullivan and Darren O’Donovan in the inside line had the opposition backs in all kinds of trouble when the sliothar came their way. Cathal making the space with his unselfish movement to leave Darren do most of the scoring. It was nip and tuck early in the first half with the Argideen freetaker punishing the Mizen boys for poor discipline. In the last five minutes of the half Rover’s Darren O’Donovan struck with two goals to add to an earlier strike to leave Mizen Rovers leading 3-05 to 1-06. Early in the second half he struck another two goals to put some daylight between the teams. Argideen battled back with a goal but Eoghan Dwyer scored a goal and a point. Argideen tacked on a couple of points but Mizen replied in kind. Argideen then took control as the locals seemed to take a breather and scored two goals but Darren O’Donovan had the last say driving to the net to bring his tally for the evening of deadly finishing to 6-08.

Final Score; Argideen Rangers 4-08 Mizen Rovers 7-09.
