Minor Football Championship

Castlehaven was the destination for the minors semi-final vs St.Colums on Friday the 8th of September. On a crisp evening the Mizen team made the better start through an early goal and point from Michael O’Reilly and two fine points from Sam Coughlan, this had Mizen up 1-3 to no score after 10 mins. But the game started to turn then as St.Colums scored a couple of goals against the run of play. As half time came Mizen were trailing a strong St.Colums team by five points. With the lads being driven on by the inspirational Goleen crowd they began the second half with a couple of fine scores. St.Colums then went and scored a further two goals to put a lot of pressure of the Mizen team. Their never say die attitude was clearly on display as the team began to start kicking great scores and cut away at the deficit. Then after some great build up play Sam Coughlan scored an excellent goal and Mizen were now within touching distance. At the other end of the pitch Mizen were kept in the game as Andrew O’Connor produced the save of the year after a fast break away attack. The time was now well and truly against Mizen as Jake Coughlan cut the deficit to two points and after five minutes of injury time St.Colums were able to hold out to win the game 5-5 to Mizens 2-12. A devastating result for an excellent Mizen minor team, but the future for the club looks bright as the passion, drive and courage that these lads showed in the jersey can only leave you feeling excited for the years to come.
