On a St.Patricks day back awhile a few of us were coming back from a minor game in Barryroe and came upon the Parade taking place in Schull that year. We loved the excitement, colour and the razzmatazz that surrounded it and there the seed was sown to set ourselves the challenge of one day having a Mizen Rovers float as part of the parade. It took a few years to actually get around to making a start on it but then it all happened in a couple of weeks. And boy was it worth it!! A few heads were thrown together to come up with ideas on what we might construct and it soon became obvious that if your representing the Mizen area the signature image must be the famous Mizen Head and of course ‘The Bridge’,all of which are represented on our Club logo. That and also once more promoting the message of Safety on the Farm’which is forever important to us. With the support of a few generous sponsors and a member with gifted hands it was assembled and painted in no time at all but still just in time for Friday 17th last. With a group of happy young Club members on board, despite the rain,we started our adventure in Ballydehob where a huge crowd lined the streets to witness over 100 participants. Our gang sang there way round the town and entertained the crowds to great applause. Back to Schull at 2pm where things were a little more muted because of the heavier rain. But not our crew who sang even louder,’Singing in the Rain’at its very best!! And now THANKS to those who contributed to making this grand adventure possible, Con (O’S Insulate)for ‘Warm Rock’, The Mac Brothers and Tim for Transport Battery power and light, GDA Jonathon for supplying us with a lot of the farm safety material we handed out as we went along. And as always to the Parents and members who helped to hand out that stuff and also look after the kids on the day. To those very same kids who made the day special and one to remember. Oh, by the way the Mizen Rovers were joint winners of ‘best Float’ in Ballydehob and runners up in Schull with first for best ‘original idea’. Great craic!!! Connie-Mizen R.
