U16 Championship

On Sunday 4th October the U16’s footballers travelled to Aughaville to take on Ballingeary in the Championship. Mizen defeated Ballingeary earlier in the year and went into this game with the hope of a good result. But as we know from past experiences Ballingeary are hard to beat in championship.

The match got underway at 11.30am with the early exchange fairly evenly balanced. Then Ballingeary split the Mizen defence to score their first goal and shortly after they broke through again and were awarded a penalty which they converted. This put them 2 goals to no score ahead. Then Mizen lads started to play some good football and after a period of sustained pressure Sam Coughlan cut through for a great goal. Ballingeary replied with another goal to put their lead back to two goals again. However another good goal from Sam Coughlan reduced their lead to three points, followed by a lovely point from a free by Mark O’Reilly. Ballingeary again replied with a point before Michael Sheehan scored another great goal to level the sides before half time at 3-01 each.

The second half got underway with still everything to play for. John Supple opened the scoring with a nice long range point but Ballingeary replied with two points on the trot. Michael O’Reilly scored a good point to tie the sides again. On the next attack from Ballingeary a shot went low through a bunch of players, hit the base of the upright and into the goal. With only three points difference the game was still there to be won; then disaster struck with a long range shot from Ballingeary which looked like it would go over dropped underneath the crossbar for another goal and then almost immediately another shot from Ballingeary deflected off a Mizen defender for another goal, this put Ballingeary 9 points ahead.

The Goleen lads tried hard to reduce the deficit but with all the Ballingeary lads packing their defence Mizen couldn’t break through and the score remained Mizen 3-03 to Ballingeary 6-03 which meant Mizen were to exit the championship at this stage.

It was a good game overall.  On the day Ballingeary seemed to have the edge on us. The Goleen lads still have a U16 league final against Muintir Bhaire to be played in the next few weeks.
